The trials and adventures of being thirteen years old--making choices, having a crush, preparing for a bar mitzvah--are explored in a collection of short fiction. Some stories, such as Rachel Vail's dark comedy about a parakeet's funeral, are spot on; others (including a glib fantasy by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin) are slight or, in some cases, more earnest than inspired.

The variety of these twelve stories reflects the many different ways in which loss can be experienced. The well-balanced collection includes contributions from Norma Fox Mazer, Virginia Euwer Wolff, Avi, and Walter Dean Myers. Young adults will appreciate that while some of the stories end with the bleakness of loss, others end with the suggestion that healing is possible, offering a sense of hope and renewal.
